I’m a 37 old woman living in Athens, Greece. My name is Aphrodite P. and I’ve been married for 7 years. I became a mom last year with IVF (in vitro fertilisation) at EmBIO. 

I’ve decided to share my personal story with you so as to give hope to the women who are struggling with infertility, hoping that I could give them a boost and make them feel less alone on their difficult journey.

It is true that the potential long-term effects of COVID-19 infection on male and female fertility have not yet been assessed. What has been studied, however, is how the sperm of men is affected by SARS-CoV-2.

Research shows that semen quality parameters appear to be negatively affected among male patients with confirmed COVID-19 compared to healthy individuals, at least in the short term, and correlate with significant impairments in semen volume, sperm concentration, sperm count, sperm motility and morphology and sperm count.

According to the guidelines issued by the Public Health England, pregnant women will have to wait until they give birth before they can be vaccinated against Covid-19.

This is because, while "there is no confirmed risk" associated with pregnancy, "as with most medicines, no specific clinical trials of the Covid-19 vaccine have been performed in pregnant women."

In a study conducted by Oxford and Imperial Universities in London, published in “The Lancet Child and Adolescent Health”, all babies up to one-month-old who needed treatment during the first Covid-19 pandemic were examined in Britain in the spring of 2020.

What happens if I get infected with this virus while I’m pregnant?

With all the information we have so far, pregnant women do not have a higher risk of getting sick from the virus compared to the rest of the population, provided they do not suffer from serious chronic diseases. Moreover, coronavirus does not seem to pose a serious threat to the embryos.

Protection from Coronavirus in Pregnancy

A few days ago, the British Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, in collaboration with the Royal Academy of Midwives and the Royal Academy of Pediatrics, gave pregnant women guidance on the necessary protection measures against Covid-19 coronavirus. Thus, during pregnancy, women must abide by all the hygiene and proprietary rules applicable to the general population.
