A new law has been passed in the summer of 2022 and brought major changes to both IVF in Greece and egg cryopreservation, commonly called “egg freezing”. According to the new law, the age limit for IVF in Greece is 54 years, thus giving women of older ages the chance to give birth with assisted reproduction.

According to published statistics in Greece, 52 children were born by women over 50 in 2007, 74 children in 2009, 128 children in 2017, 135 children in 2019, and 187 children in 2021.

I’m a 37 old woman living in Athens, Greece. My name is Aphrodite P. and I’ve been married for 7 years. I became a mom last year with IVF (in vitro fertilisation) at EmBIO.

I’ve decided to share my personal story with you so as to give hope to the women who are struggling with infertility, hoping that I could give them a boost and make them feel less alone on their difficult journey.

vlado and danica in santorini

My name is Danica and I am 36 years old. My partner Vlado is 37 years old and we have been living in Greece for three years. We are originally from Serbia; I am from Nis and Vlado is from Belgrade. We have been together for 15 years, since 2008.

How we discovered the challenge of infertility

While we were still living in Serbia, we discovered that I could not get pregnant. We looked for the cause and found out that I have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). Our doctor said that the best treatment in this case is IVF.

prp therapy with prp enriched blood plasma

Penny had always dreamed of starting a family, but after years of trying to conceive naturally and following several failed IVF attempts, she was losing hope. In this challenging phase of her life, she decided to seek Thanos Paraschos’ opinion when she heard him talking about the latest developments in extracorporeal medicine on a morning show.

The doctor reviewed her tests, which revealed no severe issues. But there was an obstacle, and that was the very thin endometrium that was not sufficient for the implantation of the embryo and for pregnancy to occur.

embryos time lapse camera

Some consider the emergence of time-lapse technology in IVF treatments a huge step forward, while others dismiss it as a "marketing gimmick".

But let’s have a look at the time-lapse procedure and its benefits in IVF:

The incubation of embryos with constant monitoring and photographing at regular intervals (time-lapse) is the latest technology used in IVF treatments, which enables embryologists to evaluate embryos in detail.

It is true that the potential long-term effects of COVID-19 infection on male and female fertility have not yet been assessed. What has been studied, however, is how the sperm of men is affected by SARS-CoV-2.

Research shows that semen quality parameters appear to be negatively affected among male patients with confirmed COVID-19 compared to healthy individuals, at least in the short term, and correlate with significant impairments in semen volume, sperm concentration, sperm count, sperm motility and morphology and sperm count.

One of the most important things for IVF is to be as healthy as possible throughout the process. So, if you are fit and informed about what IVF entails (IVF procedure), this will greatly contribute to a higher success rate.

The risks associated with men's fertility may be similar to women. That’s why becoming a dad means watching your biological clock!

When you're playing on the playground, sometimes it can be difficult to tell who is watching kids -- dad or granddad?

Experts have been busy studying the declining fertility in women and overlooked an equally important trend: infertility among men has risen too!

pregnancy in the summer

Summer is a difficult time for pregnancy.

Pregnant women feel hotter, and the heat combined with humidity can make for an unpleasant experience.

In the first trimester, the progesterone hormone causes body temperature to increase. Mood swings also occur as pregnant women try to deal with the natural discomfort of pregnancy while tolerating the heat in this unforgiving season.

εμβόλιο για κορωνοιο

According to the guidelines issued by the Public Health England, pregnant women will have to wait until they give birth before they can be vaccinated against Covid-19.

This is because, while "there is no confirmed risk" associated with pregnancy, "as with most medicines, no specific clinical trials of the Covid-19 vaccine have been performed in pregnant women."

Particularly, in The United Kingdom it is recommended:

What happens if I get infected with this virus while I’m pregnant?

With all the information we have so far, pregnant women do not have a higher risk of getting sick from the virus compared to the rest of the population, provided they do not suffer from serious chronic diseases. Moreover, coronavirus does not seem to pose a serious threat to the embryos.
