Treatment of Μenorrhagia with Progesterone-releasing Spiral

If there is menorrhagia, that is, excessive bleeding during your menstrual cycle, not caused by a polyp or fibroids, the gynecologist can solve the problem by placing a progesterone-releasing spiral, possibly during hysteroscopy or without any surgical intervention, during the period. As a minimum quantity of progesterone levonorgestrel enters the blood via the spiral (the hormone being inserted locally into the uterus), the spiral minimizes side effects.

This treatment (which is also used as a method of contraception) is applied for menorrhagia, ie, excessive blood flow during the period. However, as mentioned earlier, the use of progesterone-releasing spiral is not suitable for cases where the irregular blood flow is due to uterine fibroids, polyps or some endometrial pathology such as hyperplasia.

The use of progesterone-releasing spiral is also not indicated in several other cases taken into account by your gynecologist.
