EmBIO’s IVF Donor Sperm Program makes it possible for couples to build a family when the husband/partner has no sperm, poor semen analysis, or a harmful genetic disorder that could be inherited from the male parent. Sperm donors also make it possible for single women and lesbian couples to achieve pregnancy too.
EmBIO Medical Center has performed thousands of fertility treatments using donor sperm. We provide a wide selection of thoroughly screened and tested donors through the safe and reliable Danish sperm bank Cryos International. Read some of our sperm donor success stories.
Young Healthy Donors
The sperm donors are young healthy men from 18 to 35 years old who have undergone a strict selection process, including a medical examination, seminal liquid analysis, sexual history assessment, and a series of DNA and blood tests to ascertain they are not carriers of any sexually transmitted or infectious diseases, such as HIV, hepatitis B and C, syphilis, cytomegalovirus (CMV), gonorrhea, chlamydia, streptococcal species, trichomonas, or hereditary diseases.
Only about 1 out of 20 candidates becomes a sperm donor, because of this selection process. The sperm is bottled and cryopreserved in liquid nitrogen. The frozen sperm can be stored like this for years. Every six months, the sperm donors are retested for infectious diseases to ensure none exist and to maintain our high quality standards. If the donor retests negative and meets all standards again, then the sperm samples may be used by EmBIO.
Greek legislation protects donor anonymity. We are only allowed to treat with semen from anonymous donors. The identity of anonymous donors is registered and kept strictly confidential. However, you will be provided ample non-identifiable information on the donors to make a good selection. Our trained donor coordinators will help you find a match meeting your unique requirements from a diverse selection of young, healthy, high-quality donors who would love to share their gift of life with you.
Once you specify your desired donor characteristics, you can view the donors’ extensive background profiles, including physical characteristics (height, weight, hair and eye color, hair type, body build, blood type), ethnic background and special interests.
More than that, you’ll also get to know their educational and professional background, and whether they’ve had children of their own. You’ll have full access to the donors’ medical history. You will have a wide selection of young, intelligent and good-looking donors from which to choose. Your best match is dependent on your individualized criteria. You make the final decision on which donor you want to be part of your treatment.
What characteristics are important?
The goal is to closely match the genetic characteristics of the male parent or, if single or a lesbian couple, characteristics you would like for your child to have. Traits considered might be race, complexion, color of eyes, color of hair, height and weight. People have two genes for eye colour: Blue and brown, and the gene for brown is the dominant gene. Green and grey colours are caused by genetic mixing and belong to the blue group. Hair color and type are genetically more complicated. Our hair color categories are: Blond, brown, dark brown, black and red. When choosing a blood type, women who are Rh negative will need a donor who also is Rh negative.

Today's scientific advancements allow us to eliminate fertility obstacles like low sperm quality, infectious diseases, or genetic disorders. It is possible for you to get pregnant at EmBIO. Our successful IVF treatments have helped more than 15,000 babies be conceived.
EmBIO’s fertility staff are specialized and experienced in all methods of IVF treatment, giving us an advantage in treatment success compared to other fertility clinics. A couple or single woman can start their family through donor sperm IVF, IVF with intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) into the eggs, intrauterine insemination (IUI), or a specialized treatment solution.
The IUI insemination with the donor sperm is made by injecting the sperm with a thin tube inside the patient's uterus at the time of ovulation. This is a painless procedure.
It is also possible to use the donor’s sperm during an in vitro fertilization procedure (IVF) – it’s the process of introducing an egg to sperm outside the body in a laboratory to achieve fertilization. The donor sperm is either allowed to fertilize the egg in a liquid culture in a petri dish (traditional IVF) or an embryologist inserts a single donor sperm (ICSI) into the egg to ensure fertilization. The fertilized eggs are transferred into the patient’s uterus.
Compared to other treatments, the IUI success rate is lower (about 20% of pregnancies per attempt), while the IVF ICSI success rate is higher (35-40% of pregnancies per attempt). When coupled with donor eggs, our IVF specialists have consistently achieved success rates reaching 70% per attempt for donor egg patients.
