Gynaecologic Cancers

Types of Gynecologic Cancer

All of the pelvic organs can undergo malignant changes. The 3 most common types of gynecological cancer are (from most to least common): endometrial cancer (uterine cancer, cancer of the lining of the uterus), ovarian cancer, and cervical cancer.

The use of operative laparoscopy for gynecology cancers is fairly new and this approach should be performed only at centers whose surgeons have adequate experience in Gynecologic Oncology.

Pelvic and abdominal anatomy are magnified with the laparoscope (telescopic camera) and can easily be inspected for cancerous implants. Technical advances such as the carbon dioxide laser enable disease to be treated precisely and with a great margin of safety. These advances have also permitted many of the special surgeries that are performed to treat gynecologic cancer to be performed via laparoscopy.
