Treatment of Congenital Anomalies

Congenital anomalies of the uterus and vagina are all treated by minimally invasive procedures. Uterine septa are usually treated hysteroscopically (hysteroscopy is a procedure where a small telescopic camera (hysteroscope) is placed via the vagina, through the cervix, and into the uterine cavity), with simultaneous laparoscopy done to confirm the proper diagnosis and assure safe repair. Other uterine malformations such as the uterus that is half formed or duplicated require repair by laparoscopy. Vaginal anomalies such as the vaginal septum are repaired directly by a vaginal approach.

Recovery from all of these procedures is fast as patients are watched in the hospital for less than 24 hours. Patients are able to return to normal daily activites anywhere from 24 hours following the procedure to 1-2 weeks depending on the type of procedure.
