Hysterectomy

Hysterectomy comes from the Greek words "hysteron" which means uterus or womb and "ectomy" which means excision or removal.

In cases such as cancer or some other pathology, unfortunately, there is almost no choice except to remove the uterus. Hysterectomy is one of the most commonly performed surgical procedures. The removal of the uterus can be complete or partial, that is leaving the cervix behind for women that desire so, given that no medical contraindication exists.

Many times the ovaries and tubes are removed along with the uterus. Hysterectomy is an irreversible procedure after which a woman is no longer able to become pregnant or have a period.

There are many indications for performing a hysterectomy. These include:

• Leiomyomas (Fibroid tumors) that are rapidly enlarging and/or cause symptoms such as: Pelvic pain, pressure (constipation, urinary frequency, heaviness and bloating) as well as heavy or irregular bleeding or both
• Uterine prolapse (when the uterus is protruding low into the vagina causing infections, pressure or pain)
• Endometriosis
• Adenomyosis
• Ovarian, Cervical or Uterine Cancer

Given that Hysterectomy is a final, permanent and definite treatment for most of the above-mentioned procedures, it should be performed in patients that have failed conservative surgery or medical treatment (with Hormones and other medicine).
